Absolutely not! Emby uses SSL technology to keep your privacy secret. However, if you are going to download files, a VPN is always a good idea! Although that is absolutely not required!

There are many reasons that your connection may be slow. 

The first thing to do is to check your preferred quality. Many Emby files are very large and often better quality than displays can even show. Lowering the quality may lead to better performance without even looking worse!

Emby also has a built in tool to help with playback. Start a video and go to the in-video settings to try playback corrections.
